A spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz would only confirm that the OFT visited the Tongwell offices as part of its investigations into the UK commercial vehicle market. The spokesperson also stated:

In that context the OFT carried out an on-site investigation at its offices. Of course Mercedes-Benz is fully co-operating with the investigation which may take many months or more to complete.

Mercedes-Benz is not the only manufacturer being investigated, with Swedish firm Volvo, alongside its French relation Renault also being contacted by the authorities, alongside Scandinavian firm Scania and the German manufacturer MAN.

The OFT released a statement saying that it was, investigating suspected cartel activity involving commercial vehicle manufacturers in the UK.

At the moment, the investigation is in the preliminary stages, with OFT yet to discover whether or bot any laws have been broken or circumvented. If anything untoward is discovered, the OFT have the power to fine companies involved to the tune of 10 percent of their annual global turnover. What is more, executives who are found to be culpable are liable for prison sentences, of up to 5 years.

The ‘boat-tail’ is designed to be affixed to a tri-axle semi-trailer, which is commonly used for long-haul applications in Europe. With the introduction of on-road models in August, Mercedes-Benz is ramping up its activities in Brazil. Back in March, Mercedes-Benz do Brasil announced that it would be increasing the production capacity of its plant in São Bernardo do Campo by 2012 in order to meet the growing demand for commercial vehicles in Brazil. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Actros will be manufactured at the Juiz de Fora plant starting next year. As a result, Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ flagship vehicle will be manufactured in the plants at Wörth in Germany and Aksaray in Turkey, as well as in Brazil. The move will enable Mercedes-Benz do Brasil to respond more quickly and flexibly to the growing demand for trucks in Latin America, particularly in the rapidly expanding heavy-duty segment.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Ziegler, the president of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil, stated:

The decision to incorporate the Juiz de Fora plant into our production network for Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles ensures that the location will be part of the Daimler family for the long-term and offers the employees good prospects.

Mercedes-Benz do Brasil has moved to increase the production capacity of its domestic facility at São Bernardo do Campo, already their largest such facility outside of Europe, in order to respond to the continued growth in demand. The expansion has been funded by a €460 million loan by the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Económico e Social (BNDES). The development of the facility will increase its annual production capacity by 10,000 units by 2012, from 65,000 to 75,000. In addition the manufacture of Actros and Accelo models is to take place at the Juiz de Fora plant, as, even with the additional development, the facility at São Bernardo do Campo is not able to keep pace with the projected growth. Alongside the current expansion of the economy, Brazil is set to host both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic games in 2016, both of which dramatically increase the demand for commercial vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz do Brasil has also increased the range of models available to Brazilian buyers, as the Actros 2546 LS 6×2 and the Actros 2646 LS 6×4 have been introduced into the market. As heavy trucks, they are have been added to the range in order to appeal to the mining and long haul industries. The international cache of the Actros, a multiple winner of the ‘Truck of the Year’ award, is huge, having been a resounding success in over 20 countries since it was first released in Europe 14 years ago. Used Class 8 sleeper tractors in particular were in high demand over the first half of 2010, and that tells me the sticker price increases for new trucks pushed a lot of mid- and small-sized carriers into the used market. The significant increase in used vehicle registrations so far this year is indicative of an uptick in the industry with the changeover of the commercial fleet. Large fleet owners and operators are upgrading to new vehicles, and therefore the smaller fleet companies and independent owner- operators have great opportunities to find available clean used equipment.”

Figures compiled by ACT Research show that sales of pre-owned Class 3-8 vehicles were still subject to fluctuations, sometimes by as much as 20 percent either way by month. This however, did not stop year-on-year sales increasing, with 43 percent more than 2009. Steve Tam, ACT’s vice president for the commercial vehicle sector said:

The average mileage of used Class 8 trucks sold in July rose above trend due to a higher than average number of older trucks being wholesaled. Anecdotal evidence suggests a shortage of late model, low mileage equipment. This trend will likely continue for several more months until new truck purchases increase and bring in equipment that sat idle during the economic slowdown.

Terry Williams, the editor of Penton’s Truck & Trailer Blue Books, said:

I agree the used truck sales numbers have picked up for each month of 2010 vs. 2009, placing 2010 very near 2008 in sales. Of course these improved numbers are over an exceedingly bad couple of years – and the ‘reality pill’ is that 2010 remains at about 36% of the sales of 2007, the beginning of the downturn.

Gary Meteer at R.L. Polk and Co. observed that whether new or used, the purchase and registration of trucks shows that hauliers have regained their confidence in the volume of freight. He said:

Fleets are seeing an increase in business, enough at least to generate money to buy trucks. This buying activity definitely forebodes a continued uptick in the freight market, but one that may be gradual and small.
What they are doing is contracting out excess volume to smaller carriers; that way they don’t have to expand their operations. That volume, though, is generating enough cash for smaller operators to replace current equipment.

Whilst businesses who deal in the sale of new trucks may not be buoyed by this trend for purchasing used vehicles, Meteer insists that there are benefits, saying:

These used trucks will need parts and maintenance, and many are being dropped into geographic areas where the fleet doesn’t have a relationship with a dealer specific to that [given]brand. This offers great opportunities for dealers and independent shop owners alike.

Plant Manager Lex Lammers said:

We currently have about 90 people. We’re currently making sure we train them in groups. We have to do a proper training to bring them up to speed before they start assembling engines.

Lemmers went on to explain that the projected number of staff necessary is over 100, and so the process of hiring is still ongoing. The final number is, however, not fixed, and is contingent upon PACCAR’s fourth quarter figures.

The facility has been being readied during the summer, with the necessary equipment being installed, and checks being run to ensure that engines will be able to be produced efficiently. Lemmers said, We’re currently in full testing of our assembly equipment, which is going fine.

PACCAR began building the $400 million, 400,000 square foot plant in 2007, and pledged to create 500 jobs by 2013. However, the time-lines were disrupted by the impact of the global recession in 2008, and the plant’s opening was delayed. Robin Easton, a spokesman for PACCAR’s Washington office, stated that the facility is on course to meet the revised schedule, saying:

Things have been progressing well, and we expect to commence production later on in the year.

The facility is due to begin production in December, wherein the completed engines will be transported to various other factories across the country, to be fitted into truck chassis. PACCAR is the third largest manufacturer of trucks in the world, and their trucks are distributed by almost 1800 dealerships located throughout the world. Their presence in Asia is also growing, with nearly 50 percent of their profit coming from outside of the domestic market.

A PACCAR engine, in one of their facilities, goes through four stages during the manufacturing process. The first stage involves collating all of the necessary components, and then assembling them into a 12.9 litre heavy truck engine. The second stage involves the engine being put through a stringent series of diagnostic examinations and tests, in order to ensure that it is safe and reliable, and that no errors occurred during assembly. The third stage sees the engine calibrated, which ensures that the engine runs properly, and efficiently uses fuel. The fourth and last stage sees the engine painted, packed, and shipped to another plant, where it will be installed into the body of a truck.

Car manufacturer Ford stated that for the 450 places available on their apprenticeship schemes this year, they have received in excess of 10,000 applications. DAF trucks has 100 places available, and has received nearly 700 applications, whilst KIA Motors have received more than 500 applications for the 30 places that are available on their scheme. It is the same story at Cable and Wireless, who received 1500 applications for 30 places, and Cadbury Bournville’s local apprenticeship scheme has seen 15 applicants per available place, a figure which has increased by 50 percent since last year. Meanwhile, BT, the telecommunications behemoth, has had 24,000 applicants for their apprenticeship scheme, which has 220 places. That 24,000 is more than the number of people who applied to Oxford University in the same year.

This huge increase in applicants for apprenticeships has occurred across the board, as the difficulty of gaining a place at top university conspires with the spiralling cost of further education in discouraging many students; they opt instead for the world of work, or at least, they hope to. The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) stated that there has been a continuous increase in applications through their online service, with the numbers almost doubling in the months between April and June.

The 13 new XF105s have been sourced on through Hill Hire, on a contract hire deal scheduled to tun for 5 years. The DAF vehicles are being supplied DAF dealer Chatfields of Leeds, and their fleet sales manager Bob Bosco has stated that they are very pleased to be working with Hill Hare in order to supply such a firm as Tom Moorhouse & Son Ltd.

Tom Moorhouse & Son Ltd has been established for 123 years, and is currently run by Managing Director Chris Moorhouse, and his sister, Financial Director Josie Galloway. Mrs Galloway said:

The DAF 95s proved very reliable and were liked by our drivers. With the new added features of the XF105 version they are even more satisfied and having satisfied drivers behind the wheel is very important to us as a company. If the drivers are happy it goes a long way to ensuring that the customers are happy.

Mrs Galloway also commented on their excellent working relationship with Hill Hire, saying:

It has given us good visibility over our costs throughout the five year period, which helps with the financial management of the business. Hill Hire also take care of all the routine inspection and servicing issues in a way that ensures we have optimum availability of the trucks at all times.

The new models feature 12.9 litre DAF MX engines, which delivers 460 bhp, an increase of 30 hp on the 95s. It is also compliant with Euro 5 regulations, meaning that the fuel efficiency is improved, leading to less emissions and reduced fuel usage. They are also equipped, by request, with AS-tronic automated transmissions, as Chris Moorhouse believes that the AS-tronic has repeatedly proved its worth during their time using the 95s. Moorhouse said:

It’s contributed to good and consistent fuel economy, has proved trouble free and removed the issue of clutch changes and other related maintenance issues. I’m confident that automatics must also support safer driving, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road and traffic ahead without having to think about gear changing.

They are also equipped with Space Cabs, which feature an air management kit. They have also been liveried in Moorhouse & Son’s traditional red with white piping. Mrs Galloway said:

We went for this fresh approach rather than conventional painting as a way of showing that whilst we are long-established, we’re a progressive company. It may also make it easier to revert back to a plain white colour at the end of the contract hire period without the need for a respray, which could help towards better residual values.

The trucks will utilised by Moorhouse & Son in a variety of haulage applications across the UK, covering approximately 100,000 Km per year. They will carry a range of products, including comestibles, construction equipment, and electrical implements.

Verdant provide 24 local authorities and councils with recycling, cleaning and refuse solutions, and they have decided to eschew the option of traditional new or used trucks, and have ordered 8 plastic ones. The plastic trucks are manufactured by Linktip, and their bodies are comprised of a ‘polybuilt’ design which can provide a payload increase of 400 Kgs. Linktip have so far provided 20 ‘polybuilt’ truck bodies to the waste management industry to date. A vehicle who’s body is made of plastic, and is under 7.5 tonnes, has the potential to carry up to double a normal load, leading to fuel savings of up to £2500 per year for each vehicle.

Verdant are already utilising two of the plastic vehicles, as part of their street cleaning fleet for Melton Borough council, and they are poised to deploy six more when they begin their new contract with the Vale of White Horse District Council in October. The trucks are modelled on the chassis of either the Mitsubishi Canter or the Mercedes Sprinter, and the rear body, the tipper, is comprised of polypropylene, as opposed to metal. Ian Coxhill is Verdant’s group fleet engineer, and he explained how their fleet was a large one, comprising many different types of vehicle across various local authorities, and that they are always looking to upgrade the fleet, and find ways of increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. We reviewed Linktip’s plastic bodies, he said, and were quickly convinced of the significant benefit that they can deliver in terms of productivity gains, cost savings and environmental impact.

Verdant are a member of the Freight Transport Association’s (FTA) logistics carbon reduction scheme, which is a voluntary initiative designed to provide recording, reporting, analysis and reduction of carbon emissions in the UK freight industry. The ‘Trusted Truck’ project involves a collaboration between Volvo Trucks North America, Volvo Technology North America, the National Transportation research Centre and the University of Tennessee. It is designed to discover whether certain vehicles could be permitted to bypass the centres, allowing the resources available to be directed at trucks which are more high-risk.
The project began in 2004, and a presentation in Knoxville in August marked its conclusion. Jan Hellaker, the Vice-President for business development and government programmes for Volvo Technology North America, said:

Trusted Truck wireless roadside inspections would provide greater efficiencies to both the public and private sector. Carriers that have a strong commitment to maintenance and safety can expect to see immediate savings in time and fuel costs. At the same time, the highway inspection stations can have a greater impact by focusing on trucks whose condition is unknown.

The system entailed certain vehicles being registered as ‘trusted trucks’, and their details were then subsequently sent to the roadside inspectorates, including confirmation the FMCSA standards were met across the board. When the vehicle approached the inspectors, a monitoring system could confirm or deny that the driver’s credentials were appropriate; if they were, then the vehicle could continue on its way, without stopping for inspection. If anything is amiss, the driver will be signalled to pull over into the inspection station.

Tom Richter, the primary investigator on the Trusted Truck project for Volvo Technology, said:

We developed the Trusted Truck technology to be used with any fleet management system. By developing the system to work with technology that is already available and already in-use by many fleets across the US, we’ve largely overcome the cost and compatibility barrier.

An example of this is an already standard piece of Volvo technology, the Volvo Link. It can be fully integrated with Trusted Truck system, and utilises readily available wireless applications. Jan Hellaker stated:

The Trusted Truck system can be used with existing on-board technologies, but would also operate effectively using other ‘smart’ communication technologies being developed under the US DoT-led IntelliDriveSM program. The goal is to encourage fleets to leverage their commitment to good maintenance into significant savings in efficiency and fuel costs – not to create an additional reporting mechanism.

All of the parties involved deem the research project a success, and are now hoping for large scale pilot scheme in the US, involving a number of fleets, in order to fully test the efficacy.

The vehicles are mid-lift axle models, which utilise 17 and half inch wheels, which helps to reduce the weight by approximately 450 kgs; this increases their flexibility and manoeuvrability. They will be fitted with a range of appropriate powder tanks, in order to deliver particular flours to bakers and food companies located across the length and breadth of Scotland. They are both powered by a DAF MX engine, a 12.9 litre model which delivers 460 bhp, at an rpm of 1900. The engine is designed to give impressive torque, typically 2300 Nm at between 1000 and 1400 rpm. This level of torque means that whatever the surface conditions, the vehicles will be able to effectively achieve move-offs.

The trucks are projected to go through 110,000 kilometres per year, and the majority of those kilometres will be in the rugged beauty of the highlands. This terrain requires a high frequency of gear shifts, and so the vehicles have been custom-fitted with AS-tronic automated gearboxes, with Alan McDonald, Hutchison’s distribution manager, saying, We’ve been using automatics for some time now. Constant gear changing because of the type of roads on which we run can be very fatiguing for our drivers and the use of an automatic transmission helps to reduce that. Not having to think about gear changing also means that they can stay completely focussed on the road and traffic and this must help to improve safety. We also find that we get a better and more consistent level of fuel return from our automatic.

Occasionally, a delivery of flour needs to reach the most remote areas, such as Speyside, and so the trucks are fitted with Space sleeper cabs, which provide comfortable sleeping arrangements and storage areas for the driver.

James Davis, the general manager for commercial vehicles at Manheim Remarketing, said, Buyer attendances are certainly dependent on the nature of the stock being offered, with fresh entries seeing a healthy following, but duplicated stock or poor condition vehicles are now proving to be a challenge. Meanwhile, online buying activity continues to grow, as dealers selectively re-stock or fulfil orders in modest numbers from the comfort of their premises, without the need to travel.

Meanwhile, George Alexander, the editor of Glass’s Guide to commercial vehicles, backed up these assertions, saying, Inevitably, the most pronounced weakness has been apparent where volumes have grown most sharply. Following a succession of strong sales performances for new vans between 2005 and 2007 there is now an excess of second-hand lightweights at around four-years-old to choose from. With extended contracts having become the norm, and recessional factors leading many to cut back on maintaining their fleet to the highest standards, much of what is delivered to the used market is not attractive stock. Unfortunately, this has all come to a head at a time when the customer’s appetite to buy has temporarily gone AWOL, triggering this downward pressure on prices.

This is a problem for operators of commercial vehicles, as their load-bearing nature makes it extremely difficult for them to meet that target. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic meets it, at 98g/kW, but as it is a goods vehicle rather than a passenger vehicle it is not eligible for a discount. For vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and above, the closest any vehicle comes is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 316CDI, and that comes in at 215g/kW.

A spokesperson for TFL explained the thinking thus, It is considered that a discount for commercial vehicles is unlikely to incentivise the uptake of the cleanest vehicles as it [£9-12 per day] is a small amount of the running cost.

Electric vehicles will remain eligible for a full discount, and joining them will be plug-in hybrid vehicles. However, diesel/electric hybrids will not receive the discount. The viability of electric vehicles has been questioned, with the benefits of their zero emission status being potentially negated by the results of studies in their effectiveness, which indicate that charging the vehicles, from a power grid which is coal-fired, actually causes more carbon dioxide emissions than diesel engines. Iveco revealed figures comparing the production of electricity in the UK, a coal-fired system, to electricity production in France, which is predominantly nuclear. Carbon dioxide emissions from the UK’s system were significantly higher, at 544g/kW/hour, than France, at 85g/kW/hour. Manufacturers such as Iveco, Mercedes and Scania UK admit that electric vehicles are only really viable in countries where the generation of electricity is from a renewable source.

There will three new dealerships, in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, which will be responsible for both sales and servicing of DAF trucks, alongside the already extant DAF network in South Africa, which is comprised of ten premises. Babcock will also stock spare parts across South Africa, representing PACCAR parts. They are delighted to have secured this deal with PACCAR and DAF, as they sek to expand their presence in South Africa, with division CEO Roger O’Callaghan saying, DAF Trucks is one of the most successful truck manufacturers in Europe and offers good products, particularly specified for heavy-duty applications, as well as leading services, which form the key to success in South Africa.

Vehicles that Babcock will make available to South African customers include: the XF105, a long distance haulage vehicle, and the CF85, a widely applicable rigid vehicle, which will be available in both 6×4 and 8×4 formats. The engines in the CF series are 9 litre PACCAR MX models, which deliver 410 hp. The engines are Euro-3, and O’Callaghan stated that they have been tested in a range of region-specific situations, saying, More than 5,4-million test kilometres were accumulated, resulting in a tailor-made truck, ready for the job in African circumstances. The six-cylinder-in-line power plant combines good performance and flexibility with good fuel efficiency and reliability.

Ron Bonsen, the marketing and sales manager for DAF trucks, stressed their delight at the future collaboration with Babcock, saying, Babcock is a leading, professional and reliable partner, determined to achieve a solid position in the South African truck market. The study by Frost & Sullivan, called ‘Strategic Analysis of North American and European Hybrid Truck, Bus and Van Market’, also remarks that factors such as excellent fuel efficiency, lower costs and reduced emissions. Frost & Sullivan’s global programme manager, Sandeep Kar, stated:

Amongst alternative powertrain technologies and fuels, hybrid commercial vehicles exert the least pressure on the existing energy and transportation infrastructure and require only minimal modification to the current fueling infrastructure. This aspect of hybrid commercial vehicles is acting as one of the strongest market drivers in North America and Europe, attracting governments, commercial vehicle manufacturers, and potential consumers alike towards supporting and accepting hybrid commercial vehicles.

The rate at which new technology is assimilated into the commercial vehicle sector is largely based on the ROI (return on investment). Therefore, factoring in federal incentives, low cost of maintenance, and the instability of fossil fuel prices, the hybrid sector can offer an ROI that is attractive. However, the costs at the moment, such as power electronics and energy storage technology, are prohibitive without the grants and incentives.

Kar said, Currently, the high upfront cost associated with hybrids is countered with federal grants, incentives, and tax rebates. Although such incentives offer relief in the short term, for hybrids to be commercially viable in the long term, the upfront cost difference should reduce considerably.

There are a number of private fleets in Europe and the US which have begun to ask their truck trader for hybrid vehicles, but Kar believes that widespread adoption will only occur when for-hire fleets begin to use them. KAr commented, Standardization of key enabling technologies will not only reduce R&D expenses and complexity but also create a foundation for launching aggressive price reduction strategies that are necessary for stoking market growth.

Some portions of the routes that the vehicles must take are exposed to heavy winds, and so the council asked for the maximum hp that CF85 could take, which was a 510 bhp MX engine. When this is factored with the full gross weight of 44 tons, a power to weight ratio of 11.6 bhp ton is achieved, which allows the vehicles to cope with the wind resistance, and allows the time that a journey takes to be maintained. In order to augment this, and ensure fuel efficiency, the vehicles have also been fitted with an air management kit with side collars, which optimises their aerodynamicism.

Due to this power rating, the MX engine, a 12.9 litre model, can produce a torque rating of 2500 Nm, at an rpm of between 1000 and 1410. The benefits of this are that a fully loaded vehicle will achieve a smooth take-off, as well as excellent traction during wet weather.

This ability is also augmented by the FTT model’s double-drive set-up, comprised of hub reduction axles equipped with a cross-axle and inter-axle differential locks. Travelling on soft or wet terrain is also helped by super single tyres being affixed to the steer axle. There is also a vertical exhaust, which is designed to reduce the risk of damage when operating on a landfill site.

The vehicles are also equipped with As-Tronic gearboxes, an automated system which reduces the fatigue of the operator and standardises and reduces fuel consumption. Operator fatigue, and wear and tear to the braking mechanisms, is also reduced by an engine brake.

The vehicles feature a sleeper cab, which although in this case won’t be used for overnight purposes, still provides a spaciousness and comfort which optimises the operator’s experience, and ergonomically, his performance. The five ejector trailers are from BMI and have a capacity of 100 cubic yards. Two of these are contained trailers, with leak proof closed-tops, as they are required to carry food waste and other matter including leachate, which necessitates containment. The council has earmarked these vehicles for future use, utilising their own used DAF trucks, in the operation of a proposed anaerobic digestion facility, which would produce bi-methane as an alternative fuel.

The other 33 rigid vehicles are equipped with standard dry freight box bodies, which at present are the backbone of the fleet. Steve Mercer, the managing director, said that the demand for work came from a range of sources, as they work in a variety of applications, such as forestry, paper, timber, newspaper. Five DAF trucks and five Legras trailers are to be acquired in September from a truck trader in Europe, with Mercer saying, We have secured new work moving recycled paper from the UK into Europe and bringing [paper] reels back to the UK. Because of the European height limits, the new trailers are 4m high, and to cope with the reels, which are two tonnes each, the trailers have heavy-duty moving floors.

He also explains how foreign companies are keen to have their loads driven and delivered in the UK by British drivers, saying, It is possible European businesses may have had a bad experience with drivers getting lost or loads arriving late in the past. One of the questions I regularly get is ‘do your drivers speak English?’ Also, there are better rates coming back [to the UK] than you get going over to [mainland] Europe.

Seven of the new trucks have already been delivered; six Actros models by Mercedes-Benz and one DAF 105, and the fleet now numbers nearly 400 trucks and trailers. Mercer is also renovating the IT structure, in order to improve the routeing and logistics of the company’s deliveries, saying, Previously, we had four independently run sites, and empty running was too high. Scania, which is owned in the majority by Volkswagon AG, recorded pre-tax earnings of $465.7 million in the second quarter, in comparison to a loss of $181 million this time last year. Shares in the group had also risen by 3.7 percent, and financial analysts were optimistic for the future after the announcement, with Swedbank analyst Niclas Hoglund saying, It is difficult not be to enthusiastic when one sees these figures. It was better in every direction.

Higher vehicle volumes, significantly increased capacity utilisation and cost reductions that were implemented last year mainly explain the improvements.

The huge, and still developing, market in Brazil played a key role in Scania’s excellent second quarter, with a high demand coupled with favourable conditions such as interest rate subsidies and tax incentives. Europe was a different matter, with Scania saying, The European market for heavy trucks improved during the period. The recovery, however, is occurring slowly.

Overall truck orders increased everywhere, as the world begins to recover form the recession, with the first half of 2010 seeing a 143% increase on the last year in Europe, 230% in Latin America, 258% in Asia and 319% in Central and Eastern Europe, with Scania commenting, Due to high demand in Brazil and the improvement in Europe as well as the recovery in Asia, Scania successively increased its production during the period.

Scania also revealed the four areas within which they would be cooperating with MAN, which include axles and gearboxes, in the hope that together they are better placed to rival market leaders Daimler and Volvo.

The vehicle is equipped with double air horns, alloy wheels, and lighting bars made of stainless steel, fitted with 10 lights. In addition it has a customised FL 10 DAF licence plate.

Ford and Slater’s Spalding dealership will perform all of the after-care and servicing that the truck requires, following the recent construction of a £200,000 HGV MoT testing area. Happily, this area is next door to the primary operating station of Freshlinc’s fleet, allowing servicing to be undertaken during the the night, so as to minimise down time.

Andy Marchant, a fleet engineer, is enamoured of the low fuel consumption, saying, Our customers include several major supermarket chains who require timed deliveries into their RDCs, which can be operationally quite demanding. This makes it particularly important that we have reliable trucks, which we find our 105s to be, and to have this supported by good service back-up right on our doorstep at Ford & Slater. The fact that they can do the work at times to suit us is important. We run a very intensive operation and need to maintain a high level of vehicle availability, which these flexible servicing arrangements help us to do.

Freshlinc’s drivers have also reported positive experiences with the 105, with particular reference to the low noise levels inside the cab, as well as the overall spaciousness and comfort of the cab. The trucks will be driving approximately 180,000 Km per year, as they traverse the country delivering fresh produce.
Freshlinc also plan to expand their operations into Europe, and they have been collaborating with tyre specialists Michelin in order to minimise downtime. The efficacy of the Active Brake Assist system has been reported by many drivers, who have documented circumstances whereby it has prevented accidents, protecting not just the drivers of Actros trucks, but also drivers of the vehicles front. Even insurance companies, notoriously difficult to extract a benefit from, offer lower premiums on vehicles equipped with Active Brake Assist technology.

Daimler AG initiated a world-wide project called ‘Shaping Future Transportation’, and this entails the idealistic vision of an accident-free future for driving. While this may seem unlikely, they are constantly making great strides. The benefit of the new version of the Active Brake Assist system is a good example; because the system is now activated by stationary objects in front of the vehicle as well, it prevents accidents at, for example, sudden traffic jams or tailbacks. The system utilises radar, which scans the road in front of the vehicle over a distance of 200 metres, whilst simultaneously calculating the distances between the front of the truck and any vehicles in front, or any stationary objects in front of the truck. The system also continuously analyses these distances in conjunction with the driving style of the operator, and calculates the likelihood of an accident. Initially, the operator will be warned by a flashing red triangle, as well as an audible warning. If the situation escalates, the system automatically applies the brakes.

The radar system is immune to changes in conditions of weather and light, and is effective across all speeds, from walking pace to the full speed of a motorway. At present, Daimler’s dream of an accident free transport sector is not a reality, and even the advanced safety features of the Mercedes-Benz Actros cannot prevent all accidentts. However, the automatic nature of the braking means that if aa collision does occur, the speed of that collision, and therefore the force of the impact, will have been dramatically reduced, and so the consequences of collisions will be much less severe.

Mercedes-Benz will offering a range of packages, in order to encourage as many trucks as possible to have the Active Brake Assist system incorporated.

The new van model, the EcoDaily 70C17, has a payload capacity of 4100 Kg, and a carrying capacity of 17.2 metres cubed, making it one of the UK’s largest available panel vans. It is powered by a 3 litre engine which delivers 170 hp at a rev/min of between 2990 and 3500. The engine is also EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) compliant.

When requiring either the crew cab or chassis cab model, there are two available engine choices: the Daily 70C18, which is Euro 4 compliant, or the EcoDaily 70C17, which is EEV complaint. The EEV compliant engine has the same specifications as the engine described in the van model. The Euro 4 compliant engine is also a 3 litre model, and delivers 176 hp at rev/min between 3200 and 3500. All of these engines achieve maximum torque, even when at minimum engine speed.

Four years later, in 2008, Daimler and Foton signed an agreement which stipulated the creation of a joint venture to manufacture Mercedes trucks and engines in China. Two years later, the regulatory bodies have finally given the project their seal of approval. The new facility will produce both Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Foton automobiles, allowing the two companies to benefit from an economy of scale.

Old Dominion, a company based in Thomasville, North Carolina, has also experienced an upturn in the past few months, as Chip Overbey, their Vice President of National Accounts and Marketing, explains, We’re particularly adding across our network depending on where the need is, dock workers, local drivers, line haul drivers, as well as owner-operators. He adds that Old Dominion’s reputation, and status as the state’s largest transportation company, primarily a user of man trucks, helped them to ride out the tempest, Old Dominion’s managed to weather that storm. We were the only publicly traded ltl (less than truck load) carrier that made money during that period of time. In order to survive, however, Old Dominion was forced to cut its workforce by 14%. This tallies with a study done by the associate professor of economics and transportation/logistics at NC A and T State University Harry Sink, who revealed that 4000 transport and haulage companies went bankrupt in the two years of the recession. Chip Overbey revealed that the trucking industry saw a 13% dip in work, but the last few months has seen 6% clawed back. We’re cautiously optimistic with that, but you have to keep in mind where your base was. So, even being up six percent, you’re really only not quite back to halfway from where you started, he said. The downside to the rise in business is that the cost of transportation will likely rise as well, a cost which will trickle down to the customers.

As the industry picks up however, and tonnage rises- which it has by 6.5% in the last 7 months- the lack of drivers has become a real problem. The problem takes on another dimension when you realise that under 25% of drivers are below the age of 35, whilst about 18%of drivers are over 55, and thus nearing the age of retirement. The driver shortage could soon explode, particularly as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has tightened regulations on drivers in its CSA 2010 legislation, which could seen a further 10% of drivers shorn from the industry. Wilson recommendation is the intermodal model, a sort of relay system of drivers: “Growth in intermodal could make the truck driver job more attractive by shortening lengths of haul and drive time, while increase home time,” she said. “In the long run, this could be a good solution as iit would help change many of the negative lifestyle factors in trucking. Wilson also observes that the problems in the freight industry could benefit other forms of transportation, and she proffers this sage advice: Capacity is going to tighten and rates are going to rise. Shippers would be wise to be first at the table negotiating rates and capacity – such as guaranteeing a minimum level of business in return for guaranteed carriage or limited rate hikes two or three years out”.
