Workhorse 1954 Dodge With Hemi V8 Truck Still Going 13/03/2008

Ed Johnson first saw the 1954 Dodge truck when it was delivered to his neighbor as a brand-new Dodge truck in the summer of 1954. At the time he owned his own used truck a 1940 Chevrolet although it was not considered that old back then. The new dodge was designed with a fifth wheel and 354 cubic inch gears with a 275 horsepower Hemi head V8 engine which could be used as a tractor for an automobile carrier. Although the owner never used it for this purpose and used it only sparingly but keeping it good condition till he died. Johnson bided his time and offered to buy the used truck from the widow of his neighbor who said no. Years later he offered to buy it form the son of his neighbor and got a yes. Johnson finally bought the used truck in 1983, 29 years after seeing the vehicle being delivered.

The Dodge continued hauling stuff for another 16 years and only really retired the used truck in 1999. Johnson said, “I’ve hauled seven to eight ton loads many times, it goes in gear well, but you have to help it.” Johnson fully restored the dodge in 1999 and uses it only for pleasure drives every now and then. With an odometer that has barely reached 26,500 miles since it came off the production line 48 yrs ago, it looks like this used truck will be sticking around for a little while yet.
